I have a 92 chevy astro van and it keeps overheating i kept putting water in it but now it has overheated 4 gd

and it is making a wierd sound i put water in it but it wont go back down what is wrong and what do i need to fix now???? i have already replaced the lower hose and they said i dont need a water pump but maybe i do
