Why would an American Girl Doll have a tiny "x" on her bottom?

I'm thinking of buying one "used" for my youngest daughter and a lot of the ones I am looking at have the "x" on them. I might still buy a new one, but I want to make sure she will take care of it first, so the "used" one is a tester.
